Celebrating Motherhood - Chic Moms Q&A

April 22, 2019

"She gave me wings and let me fly, always encouraged me to be whom I wanted and live how I wanted."

Of all the “professions” out there, we believe the role of a mother is the most challenging and admirable. Mothers are very often the most selfless -- they love and give endlessly without asking for much in return.

We at Maggie Wu Studio believe in celebrating the strength of a woman and encourage everyone to dedicate time to themselves. As Mother’s Day approaches, we wanted to feature three modern-day women who play multiple roles on a daily basis. We speak to them about what it means to be a "chic mom" and share tips on how to find the right balance in life.

Meet: Kanch Porta Panjabi

A mother of 2, Kanch is the Co-Founder of Living Alive Consultancy, an international company that launches and grows businesses that inspire others to live well. She had been nominated for young creative entrepreneur by Business Week and won the design category of Perspective Magazine’s 40 under 40. Her son Blai is 4½ years old and her daughter Lila is 11 months old. Kanch sent us a couple photos of her daughter Lila wearing our Forever Silk Scrunchie and we thought it was the cutest thing ever!

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

We do not celebrate Mother's Day in a particular way - my theory is that every day is Mother's Day. Just waking up and having the luck to be a mom is enough.

Most powerful advice your mother gave you?

“You can do anything”. My mother was the most beautiful soul I had the honor to know and love and be loved by. She gave me wings and let me fly, always encouraged me to be whom I wanted and live how I wanted. She supported me to be me! (Even if from time to time, it was not something she totally agreed with). My happiness was her existence. As I write this it brings tears to my eyes – what I would do just to hear her voice that one more time!

What advice would you like to pass on to your child/children?

Be sure that stories don’t run your life, be free, be bold and have a lot of FUN! And who cares about what others think of you – you only have yourself to answer to.

How do you successfully maintain a sense of self while being a mom?

I struggled with this daily until recently when I realized that ’sense of self’ is a story and I always played this story in my head when I could not do what I wanted to with my time. So then I stopped and started doing what I wanted to – living for me.

Did you have a self-care routine before you became a mother, how has that changed for you as a mother?

I have always not taken care of myself too well, putting doing everything else first, and deeming I was not ‘important’. After I became a mom, this all changed. It made me get softer in life and towards me! I now start my day with a 10-minute meditation, followed by praying and a gratitude journal. On a weekly basis, what I do for self-care is going to barre classes and having a glass of wine with my girlfriends. On a monthly basis, I get my nails done, my hair done and squeeze in a massage when I can.

Meet: Jocelyn Liipfert Lam

Jocelyn has a baby boy, Mercer, who’s now 6 months old. In addition to being a new mom, she is the founder of a Hong Kong-based creative agency Liipstiik Studio. Jocelyn has led teams to create digital and social media work for global brands including Nike and Chanel. We have admired Jocelyn's creativity for a while now and we are so glad she let us "debut" her newborn baby in her beautiful home.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

This is my first Mother's Day as a mother myself, as I'm new to the job!  We are probably going to keep celebrations low-key with breakfast at home, with my husband, Mercer and I, and our dog Zadie, all in our pajamas.

Most powerful advice your mother gave you?

My mother has been such a huge support to me since having baby Mercer - she was with us for the first 2 months of his life, helping me to adjust to motherhood. It's hard to pinpoint the single best advice she gave me, but one big learning she shared with me is to not be so hard on myself. Modern day moms really have so much to balance and feel a lot of pressure from all corners of the universe. Sometimes we feel fearless and powerful, and other times, we feel overwhelmed, defeated and exhausted. She's taught me to be kind to myself no matter what I'm feeling.

What advice would you like to pass on to your child/children?

Find the things you love and then find the time to do them as much as possible.

How do you successfully maintain a sense of self while being a mom?

Haha – I'm a new mom so I am still trying to figure this one out.  Right now I try to do small, daily things that make me feel human, which can be celebrating things like taking a shower or managing to put on makeup.  Being able to go back to work in my life as an entrepreneur has also helped me remember that being a mother is one of my many layers.

Did you have a self-care routine before you became a mother, how has that changed for you as a mother?

I really think "me time" has taken on a whole new meaning now that I'm a mom.  I thought I needed "me time" before but now I really crave it.  Now, the juggle of business and personal is so much crazier than I could've imagined.  My husband and I plan our time each week making sure that we both have time together, and time on our own to connect with friends or get alone time.  For me, carving out a little bit of time each week purely for me and no one else, where I can be alone with my thoughts and reflect, is key to my sanity.

Meet: Maria Vilarino

Maria Vilarino is a Visual Merchandiser and a mother of two: 6-year-old Iago and 3-year-old Roque. She currently resides in Hong Kong with her very active family – you can often see her going to the beach and soccer matches with her sons on her Instagram account. Iago is also a budding model and it was so  fun to shoot with this chic mother & son duo.

How are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

Actually, I celebrate Mother's Day every day. Every night when I read the story at bed with them I feel like I’m the luckiest woman in the world.

Most powerful advice your mother gave you?

Be myself no matter where I am.

What advice would you like to pass on to your child/children?

 To believe and trust themselves.

How do you successfully maintain a sense of self while being a mom?

I try to find time just for myself, for the things I used to do before having kids. That makes me feel better but it also allows me to enjoy the time I spend with them more.

Did you have a self-care routine before you became a mother, how has that changed for you as a mother?

Before being a mom, I didn't pay too much attention to that to be honest. But now, with less time to sleep, I put aside some time for my skincare routine every, and I pay more attention to what I eat. I also try to workout at least 3 days a week to keep myself healthy and active.

Thank you Kanch, Jocelyn, and Maria for being apart of our Mother's Day feature!
